8 Environmentally Friendly Ways to Celebrate Earth Day

EATABLE X Plastic Neutral Movement

There’s No Planet B.

Undeniably, we need to do our part to save the planet as the world is adapting to the impacts of climate change and other environmental damages. However, when we become conscious of our environmental footprint every step of the way, we are contributing to an even bigger cause towards prevention and restoration.

rePurpose Global

EATABLE has officially joined alongside rePurpose Global on the Plastic Neutral Movement to remove as much plastic from nature as used in our products. While 2021 marks the 51st anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970, it is also incredibly special as many businesses continue to fight for the betterment of our environment while battling a global pandemic.

EATABLE x rePurpose Global: Plastic Neutral Movement Impact Map

We commit to donating a percentage of every product purchased to fund the collection of 440 lbs of low-value plastic waste from the ocean and landfills every year. Low-value plastic is then collected, processed, and reused by a social enterprise in Nairobi, Kenya that employs and empowers waste pickers to tackle plastic waste. To further reduce the future use of virgin plastics in our product, we will work with rePurpose Global to build a more circular business and delivery model.

Family-Friendly Ways to Celebrate Earth Day

Like how we came up with our exclusive list of indoor activities ideas, we also want to dedicate this article to a list of meaningful activities we can do to celebrate Earth day together.

Earth Day has a rich history that covers more than just the topic of recycling. As a matter of fact, it has always been an invaluable opportunity for parents to plan fun and engaging activities to educate our youngsters in a variety of subjects such as science, art, geography, and math.

Raising awareness at a young age can help build healthy habits, which then will contribute towards a bigger environmental impact. As a matter of fact, we also want to help make a difference and spark a passion starting from our family to do our part in taking care of the Earth.

Create a small indoor garden

Almost all vegetables and fruits can be grown in different sized pots. With summer months ahead, it is the perfect time to plant and grow your own food in a small patio space. Harvesting and preserving the fruits of your labour is also a great family bonding activity. Consider using these fresh fruits and vegetables in your daily meals or learn new ways to pickle them for longer storage time.

Try Outdoor Cycling with a Bike

Bring along your family to an upbeat cycling session on a sunny weekend is one of the healthiest ways to enjoy the surrounding outdoor beauty. Pack a few picnic items, carry your bikes, visit a nearby trail, and break a sweat while you’re at it!

Go on a Nature Walk

Don’t own a bicycle? How about planning for a nature walk or a short afternoon hike for you to explore the nearby forest trail in your city? While you’re at it, you can also plan a little scavenger hunt in small parks for children to search for hidden objects or basic things like plants, animals, water, spider web, bark, mushrooms etc.

DIY Reusable Lunch/Shopping Bags

Reduce your environmental footprint by decreasing the use of plastic. It is actually not too complicated to DIY your own reusable bags for snacks, brunches or lunches! Involve the family into some serious cutting projects so you can find and sew together the most beautiful cotton fabric patterns and make your own reusable lunch or shopping bags.

Plant a Tree

Participating in a community stewardship program might be a wonderful way to start getting involved in caring for natural areas across the city. Be a part of something very meaningful as you volunteer alone or with your family to plant trees, shrubs or wildflowers to help grow Toronto’s urban forest.

If you must shop, take an extra green step by using a coupon website like Tenere to plant a tree when you use a discount code.

Unplug for One Day

Unplug your phone, the Wi-Fi, the Internet, and electricity for a day while staying on a campground for a short camping trip can be viewed as a challenge for some, but it is also a great way to go back to the basics.

Watch a Documentary About the Earth

Microcosmos, March of the Penguins, Life, Great Migrations, Monkey Kingdom, Chasing Coral, Hostile Planet, Our Planet, Night on Earth – Enjoy some quality screen time while you learn a few things in the process of watching these documentary titles. These action-packed nature documentaries offer exceptionally valuable educational content and a collective experience of the great outdoors from the comfort of your living room. If you have documentary lovers running within the family, then you surely don’t want to miss out on these!
